THE FRINGE CURATOR // TRACIE CHENG

MOVING THROUGH THE CRACKS

ARTWORK BY TRACIE CHENG
Artist's website:  http://www.traciecheng.com/

I am always a sucker for fluid movement. These pieces by Tracie Cheng are gorgeous and full of texture, flow and I love the use of gold. The flowing and floating organic shapes are interesting without being overpowering... you get to still enjoy the shades and texture in the background while being embraced by the woven and wavy focal point.

NEW INSTALLATION // YUMMY HOUSE SARASOTA

I am so proud to announce that I have a 10 piece collection that will be permanently installed at the new Yummy House located in Sarasota

Here is a preview, however - I hope you will visit the Yummy House to see the entire collection throughout the restaurant's dining room. These babies gave me lots of happy days and lots of struggles during their time in y studio. I guess that is the beauty of making art - sometimes it doesn't always go as planned and you have to just keep at it, keep testing out an idea or tweaking a method that you you are familiar with in order to achieve the vision that you have in your head. There are pieces in tones of jade, indigo and a dusty rose within this collection. I used lots of texture/modeling paste and watered down my colors to create what could possibly 100's of layers of washes all total. While the blues and greens were a breeze - the pink pieces (not pictured) were so hard to complete... Their color kept changing after drying and so, I added layers upon layers to achieve the right shade for the aesthetic of the new restaurant. I am so happy that they all finally came together and that the pieces that gave me a little headache are now my favorites... I worked many many hours on these works and I am very proud of them, I pushed through the difficulties and in the end - the collection houses ten unique pieces that all compliment one another. I am thankful to Charlie Schiller for the opportunity and for extending the commission of these pieces to me for her client.

These pieces are so near and dear to me that I will be such a delight to see them hanging during the opening of the restaurant -right around the middle of February for Chinese New Year. I hope to see you there!

THE FRINGE CURATOR // HEATHER DAY

WE WE'RE SLEEPING

ARTIST // HEATHER DAY
ARTIST'S WEBSITE: http://heatherday.com
ARTIST'S INSTAGRAM: https://www.instagram.com/heatherdayart/

I'm a follower of Heather Day's work. I love her messy take on painting. I use a lot of water and splashy mark making in my work too so, for me, it's very inspiring to see such a successful artist creating in the same ways. I love her take on blues and her scribbles of ochre and gold. Heather Day's work is familiar commercially - she has sold through Crate and Barrel, JCrew and has collaborated with other big brands like Madewell, Lululemon and Banana Republic. Follow her. She is amazing.

THE FRINGE CURATOR // HULYA OZDEMIR

Wishing Well

Artwork by Hulya Ozdemir

This is just a small sampling of the beautiful watercolor portraits by Hulya Ozdemir. I love her style, use of color and the unique personalities that she gives her muses. I don't know Hulya - I found her work while browsing pinterest, if I were lucky enough to have her in my stock of local artists - I would be showing her work non-stop.

My #WordOfTheYear - can you guess it?

I've seen a few 'grammers, 'tubers, tweeters and bloggers post about their word of the year. The more I thought about it the more I wanted to find my word. 2017 was a roller coaster so I needed a powerful word to help cut a path for 2018. Then, I found it - my word is CURATED.

So why CURATED?

Lately I have felt like I didnt have a good handle on things - like, all things. So I have been exploring the concept of living more of a minimalist life. This would include donating items that I never use or don't need to people who would truly enjoy them - stuff like clothes I don't wear, extra sets of dishes, tons of bedding and even NEW stuff that has been purchased on a whim yet never even opened!

This lead me to the term curate. If I really stopped and looked around at my life, tasks, work, stuff... could I curate the best life for myself - of course I could. So, my hope is that each month, I pause and look inward, curating an intentional and positive life.

While I don't really have an outline just yet on what I will curate each month (feel free to reply to this email with suggestions!) I know that it will be things that make my life easier, healthier and happier.

CURATED - so far...

So far, I have spent the better part of January finding the perfect word (for me) to live by in 2018. Now that I have it, my plan is to activate it and let the power of this word help guide me to my best self.

For me, the word curate means that I will only allow the things/people/events into my life that feed my soul. That I will not buy things due to boredom and will curate a style that makes me feel comfortable in my own skin. I will curate my time better and give myself the ability to be alone more - to think and relax and to create often.

Do you have a word for 2018? If you do - reply to this email and let me know what it is! I'd love to cheer you on while you make this year the very best one yet. If you don't have a word - what do you think? Are you going to search for one? It's never to late to start.
